What's on a well log

When a driller puts in a well, he fills out a form as he goes: what kind of rock he hit at so many feet, how deep he was when he found water, how deep the hole ended up. Then he files it with the state. That form is your well log, and it has the numbers you need before you spend a dime on a hand pump.

✓ Total depth

How far down the hole goes. The number everybody quotes.

✓ Static water level

How deep the water actually sits in the well. The number that decides which pump fits.

✓ Yield

How many gallons per minute the well produces.

✓ Casing size

The diameter of the pipe in the ground, usually 4 or 6 inches. It’s on most logs, and it decides whether a hand pump fits beside your electric pump.

The number that matters more than depth

When you buy a house, they’ll tell you it’s a 300-foot well. Nobody really talks about the static water level, and for a hand pump that number matters more than the depth. A hand pump only reaches down to the water and a little past it, and somewhere around 325 feet to water is the practical ceiling. The shallower your water sits, the more pumps you can choose from and the easier they are to work.

So the log is where you start. Everything else comes after you lay your hands on it.

Every state files them differently

There’s no one database to search. In Idaho you can pull up just about any well log from the last 30 or 40 years online in a few minutes. In Georgia there’s nothing online at all, and your best hope is a phone call to the county health department. So we tracked down how it works in all 50 states and put the instructions in one list, a few lines per state.
